So many suggestions – what do I focus on?

Quote

Pause to consider if you work to live or live to work – either way there is a balance to be found (ydangle coaches)

This week we will consider the numerous books, guides and role models available.

Passing through airports often leaves time to fill, and a quick glance at the concourse bookshop will usually show a number of people buying one or other book on self-development, discovering self, relationships, and stress, time or business management. Clearly many of us feel a gap in parts of our lives and this is where books covering ideas, self-coaching and role models fit in. But which to choose?

Importantly the choice has to remain very personal to you as an individual. It should however relate to two key factors in your life:

Your long term plan, desire or outlook on what you want to achieve during your life time.

Your ‘life-to-date’ exposure to life and people around you which has shaped you as a unique person and become part of your internal reference base for decision making.

Some of us are more people focused, some prefer structural models or technical matters and others still like to read and study role models around them. Over time you will find you gyrate to a certain style of book. I prefer ones that use stories and parables to create a mental picture or story around a circumstance that I can then relate to. The main point is that it should be a style that you find both attractive to read, easy to follow and useful to adapt and apply.

What is essential is that you reflect on the two key factors above. Make sure you are aware of the factors that influence your thinking and the incidents and people in your life (current and past) who helped shape your wishes and values. Try to make a point of reading a development book every few months, even if it is just by way of relaxation.

Till next week
