Establishing Your Leadership Toolkit

QUOTE

A moment’s insight is sometimes worth a lifes experience Oliver Holmes

AA key action one needs to take to start to improve one’s leadership skills is to consider your personal Leadership/Management Toolkit and to start to build up a set of skills, knowledge and resources that you can draw upon as you progress through life and your career.

Much of the structure around you is actually the basis of your Toolkit. Take for example your past courses, education, organization structure, dress code, safety rules and company or social website. These are all tools at your disposal. Both the organizations and your Values, Vision, Strategy and Metrics are all key drivers of your and your staff behaviors. How well do you know and use them?

They are key tools giving you structure, direction and parameters in which to make decisions and give leadership to your staff, employees or family. Do you use your existing tools?

Lets start to build your toolkit and we will add to it as we journey together each week (You should work actively at recognizing and including other tools specific to your role and previous learning’s):

- VISION - Organization or Personal Vision (gives you a firm basis to guide your decisions)

- STRATEGY - Your Strategy (allows you to focus on what you and/or the organization wants to achieve)

- VALUES - Your Organization and Personal values (sets out the behavior drivers for you)

- STRUCTURE - The organization’s formal hierarchy and structure (ensures that tasks are correctly allocated, responsibility and accountability defined and duplication or gaps are minimized)

- METRICS - All measurable targets that drive organizational and individual behaviors towards success

We will explore these tools and add others as the weeks progress.

Till next week
